12:26 pm - Garden
|
My garden is driving me nuts this year. I planted two weeks ago, and since then nothing has happened. All the seedlings I put in are still there - they haven't died, with the exception of a few tomato plants that didn't survive the first few days. (I think they may have gotten buried under too much mulch.) But they haven't put on any new growth or blooms either. The established plants from last year are doing just great though!
I did the exact same thing I did last year, with the exception of using shredded leaves instead of hay for mulch. But I put down some bone meal, put a layer of newspaper, then covered with mulch, and then dug through the papers into the soil to plant.
The weahter has been a bit cool for June in the past few weeks, and not reliably sunny, but not a ton of rain either - I've been watering when we don't have rain though.
Why won't they grow?

10:40 am - Life
|
I'm sitting on the couch with a baby strapped to my chest and a baby laptop on my lap. :) We decided to get one of the mini-laptops since they were so reasonably priced at Dell. It's so cute! The compressed keyboard will take some getting used to - mostly so far the dash and apostrophe key being in the wrong place are the two that keep throwing me. That and needing to relearn how to avoid bumping the touch pad on a laptop since it's been a while since I used one. But it will be perfect for traveling with.
This weekend we're visiting the in-laws in Maine. The little one will get to meet his great grandparents for the first time tomorrow! It's absolutely beautiful here today. As a matter of fact, I may take this and migrate back outside soon if the little one is content to keep napping.
My updates here have been even more sporadic that normal lately - I am still alive and doing well, but for the most part my life is occupied with all things baby lately, so I've been posting a lot on the baby blog instead.

5:53 pm - Hearing tests
|
 Created by Train Horns
Although, a more interesting site that was linked to in discussions of the test results is here - has a wider range of tones to play with: http://www.freemosquitoringtones.org/
I can hear 17.4 very clearly, can hear 18 although mainly when it starts and stops, and can only really tell that 19 - 21 are playing because of the click when it starts and stops. (22 I can't hear a starting click, don't know if that's due to the sound file or if I'm actually picking up a tiny bit of the actual noise on 19-21).

I don't have enough financial background to know exactly how accurate this is, but from what I do understand it does a pretty good job of explaining the credit crisis.

10:03 pm - Baby stuff
|
|
I put up a couple of weeks worth of updates over on the baby blog, including an "OMG she's pregnant" picture from about a week ago - if you want to see pictures of me, that's the place to go look. From here on out I'll be trying to put at least a brief "Hi, yup, still no baby" post up every day until the little one decides to make his appearance. Website is http://www.kilbridekid.blogspot.com/

11:30 am - Baby Blog
|
I've started another website strictly for posting about baby stuff. That way I can give my relatives a site to check out that won't be swamped out with random memes and quizzes (because obviously I'm posting SUCH a high volume of stuff here lately!) and so that those who might not want to hear about baby stuff don't have to. :)
My plan is to update it somewhat regularly but as the mood strikes me for now. As my due date gets closer I'll switch to posting on a daily basis, so that people don't have to wonder if an extended silence means I'm in the hospital or just haven't felt like posting in a few days.
If I post anything of real significance (like, ya know, "the baby is here!") over there, I'll repost it here or put a link here. But the little daily baby chatter will only be posted over there most likely.

1:03 pm - Ahh, victory...
|
After an hour and a half on the phone with Dell support, I finally managed to convince them that the fact that my DVD drive intermittently won't recognize certain CDs was a problem with the DVD drive, not a problem with my CDs. The fact that the CDs that wouldn't play in my computer would play just fine in every other computer in the house, that they would play fine one day and not the next, and that about 1 in 5 CDs in my collection would have these problems didn't seem to be very convincing to the tech on the phone. "Some CDs just aren't compatable with certain systems." "Even though this is one of the CDs that came with the computer?? Or how about the ones that will play on the other Dell machine of the same line, just a different model number?" Still, the tech seemed convinced that the fault was with my CDs, not with the drive. I'm not sure what finally managed to convince him to let me replace the drive now, while it's still under warranty. He'd actually managed to find an update that seemed to resolve at least most of the problems I'd been having - at that point I was willing to just assume that the OS CD that wasn't working was just dead, and ask for a replacement. That was when he decided to send a tech out to replace the drive itself for some reason - I'm glad, because even though the drive was working better with the update, it was still being finicky about certain tracks on certain CDs.
It's funny how now that the DVD drive has been replaced, so far every single one of the CD's that was "broken" and wouldn't play with the old drive now works fine. :) (Including the OS CD)

10:20 pm - Character....
|
Taltos was being a complete character today. He's been having some dominance battles with Aide lately - I think Aide is coming out on top for the most part too, which makes Taltos' reasserting of himself today even more amusing.
Round one - when I give Taltos his medicine at night, he gets a handful of treats as a reward for cooperating. Unfortunately I'm out of the treats he actually likes, and for the past few nights have had to give him the ones he'll sometimes eat, but sometimes won't. So he got his pill and treats in the bathroom, and then I did some stuff in the bathroom to give him a minute to eat the treat without the other cats stealing it from him. He walked over, sniffed the treat, then walked away and sat down so I figured he didn't want it and opened the bathroom door. As soon as Taltos made sure that Aide was on the other side of the door and could see into the bathroom, he walked over and snarfed up the treat. I've never seen a more blatant "Ha, I got a treat and you didn't" look from Taltos. He totally was just waiting to rub it in with the other cats. :)
Round two - earlier this evening I was attempting to stir a newly opened jar of organic peanut butter, and dropped it instead. Of course, all the nice gooey peanut butter oozes easily, so I ended up with about a quarter of the jar on the floor. (*sniff, sniff* Such a waste - I have to get my sister to bring me the Trader Joe's peanut butter from MA since we don't have a store around here!) Not wanting it to go to any more waste than necessary, I scooped it up onto a paper plate and tossed the plate out into the yard for the wildlife to munch on.
Well, Taltos apparently saw his opportunity and bolted. By the time I got my shoes on to retrieve him he was down by the cars, so I stopped to get my coat as well. I got out the door just in time to see Taltos chasing another cat out from under the car. I figured either Taltos would end up taking off into the woods and be gone for the night, or I'd get out there just in time to end up witnessing a cat fight. As I was walking down the road in the dark, I could see the other cat running up the road ahead under the streetlight, but couldn't see Taltos. So I kept going up the road, calling to Taltos, and a minute later saw him come trotting back up to me, so proud of himself. It was such an odd combination of postures - his tail was up in the air in classic "happy kitty" mode, but was still bottle brushed from his encounter with the other cat. He seemed calm enough though and brushed my legs on the way past, so I figured it was worth the risk to pick him up. He was perfectly happy to let me pick him up and carry him, but was almost shaking he was thrumming so much. I couldn't decide if it was purring, cold, or excitement causing him to vibrate like that. Of course he got soundly praised for being a brave kitty and defending the house all the way back to the door. And when I put him back inside and Aide came up to check him out, Taltos promptly put Aide down with a swat and a hiss.
Taltos has been happily strutting around the house all evening since then - all hail the brave defender! :)

5:05 pm - One of those days...
|
Today is one of those days when I feel like I've been running a marathon all day, but haven't actually gotten anything done. Of course part of that is because I've been tied to the computer and the phone trying to deal with an ongoing project, which generated lots of stress, and meant that anything else could only get accomplished in small bursts in between call attempts. But the good news is we've gotten our desired rate lock at the lowest rate I've ever seen, which is very nice. So all the stress paid off, and now I can relax and stop checking the rates twice a day.

5:23 pm - Consequences of pregnancy...
|
I think my body is trying to stock up on as much REM sleep as possible between now and when the baby comes - I have been having the most unusual dreams pretty much every night for the past several weeks. Sometimes I remember them the next day, sometimes I do not, but every morning leaves me waking up going "what was my subconscious doing that for?!"
In related news - everyone knows that pregnancy makes you have to pee all the time. No one ever mentions the logical outcome of that - the need to dig out a new roll of toilet paper every time you turn around. I'm beginning to feel like I should have bought stock in it or something!
current mood: amused

5:16 pm - Day 1 of maternity leave
|
Of a sort, at any rate. Today is the first day that feels like a change in my routine, instead of just continuing vacation. My last day of work was December 19th, but between then and now there's been enough holiday stuff going on that it's felt like vacation. But today my husband was back to work. I normally would not be back to school at this point, but I would be at least trying to start pulling together my syllabus, reviewing lecture slides, setting up websites, and otherwise updating course content for the new semester. Or actively procrastinating doing so.
Instead, today has been a day of staring at the upcoming months of no scheduled times, trying to figure out what my new routines will look like. I like my routines. I hate the shifts from one set of routines to another. I like having a general idea of what my day will look like when I get up in the morning. So this will be a bit of an interesting challenge for me, trying to make sure I take the unstructured time and turn it into something at least somewhat productive, and make sure I don't start letting my sleep schedule get too shifted, or spend too much time on reading or games. (Or more likely, having hours at a time disappear into the void of the internet!)
Today was not quite as structured as I was planning to make it, but I did get a lot of little, necessary things done, so I'm relatively pleased with it as a starting point for the way my new life will go. I'll just need to build on that for Day 2.

8:59 am - The gift that keeps on giving....
|
|
As I pulled into the parking lot at work today, something caught my eye at the intersection ahead of me. My first thought "Is someone setting off fireworks?" My second thought ".... oh. That was a transformer." It was a very pretty shower of sparks though!
